When Sales Slow Down but the Grind Doesn’t Stop: Summer Struggles as a Small Business Owner
Summer is supposed to be the season of sunshine and success. But if you’re a small business owner like me—especially in the beauty, home scent, and skincare space—summer can sometimes feel more like a slow burn than a booming season.
Despite my best efforts—posting daily on social media, setting up beautiful displays at local pop-up markets, running seasonal promotions, and engaging with loyal customers—sales have slowed to a frustrating crawl. And I know I’m not alone.
The truth is: summer sales slump is real.
Many small businesses experience this seasonal dip. Customers are vacationing, budgeting tighter, or simply not in a buying mindset when the heat rises. Add to that the current economic pressure—we’re all feeling the pinch—and it’s no wonder carts are abandoned and foot traffic feels light.
But here’s what’s hard to admit: it’s discouraging.
It’s draining to pour your heart, time, and money into a business you love, only to feel like the return doesn’t reflect the effort.
I’m not just sitting back and hoping things turn around. I’m adjusting. I’m creating smaller, more affordable luxury products so that customers can still indulge without blowing their budgets. From 1.5 oz candles to mini body oil bottles and sample-size skincare, I’m making it easier for people to treat themselves without the guilt. Because I get it—luxury should still be accessible, even when times are tough.
I’ve also doubled down on visibility:
Attending every local pop-up market I can.
Posting reels, testimonials, behind-the-scenes content, and scent stories on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
Offering bundle deals and incentives for repeat purchases.
Still, there are days it feels like shouting into the void. And as much as I believe in my brand, the weight of slow-moving inventory and rising costs can get heavy.
So if you’re a fellow maker, artisan, or small business owner feeling the same pressure—know this: you’re not alone. This isn’t failure. This is the hard part they don’t show you in the highlight reels. And if you’re a loyal customer reading this, just know how much it means when you shop small. Every order, every like, every kind word keeps the spark alive.
This summer might be slow. But I’m not stopping. I’m building. I’m creating. I’m adjusting. Because I believe in the value of what I offer—and I know that even in the slow seasons, showing up still matters.
Thank you for sticking with me. And if you haven’t browsed my latest mini products yet, take a look. Luxury is still here—just in a smaller size.
